Managing Dementia at Home: Pat and Phil’s Story

Following assessment, Phil was introduced to Telecare equipment that would help him to live with dementia, providing peace of mind for both himself and wife, Pat.

There were times that Phil used to leave the house to go to the local shop, which should be a 5 minute round trip, but without his sense of time, he would be gone for much longer periods. The functionality on the Buddy System gives Phil freedom and lets him know how long he has been away, as well as let Pat know he is safe by being able to track his whereabouts. Pat says, “It would be awful if he couldn’t go out because I was worried about him so really is giving peace of mind.”

Phil needs daily medication to assist with his symptoms and says, “It is too dodgy for words if I were to miss them.” An easy to use tablet dispenser makes managing his medication simple and reduces the risk of errors. The dispenser is set up with correct doses and times, and if not taken within this time frame an alert can be raised to the monitoring centre. Pat says, “It is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment as I wasn’t always able to keep track of when Phil needed to take them.”

Telecare has made a massive difference in both Phil and Pat’s daily lives.

I can’t praise the staff enough for all the hard work they do to help people like myself get back on their feet and become independent. Their encouragement has meant that I am now doing things I never thought I would be able to do again.
